New Tapestry Finally Finished!

Between Again
Copyright 2008 with detail

This is my new piece that is done with sewing thread. The piece is 96 square inches. I am using one of my favourite techniques-soumak. It involves images that are important to me such as puzzle pieces, Alpha and Omega, feathers, peonies, and a picture in the background that I took of the Vancouver BC skyline. When I enlarged the picture, I discovered that I had taken a picture with an object falling from the sky. A nice surprise!

I love that the dark puzzle pieces look like little men falling out of the sky. Jan

Kathe, how much of this tapestry is soumack? It's quite amazing!

Thanks, all, for your kind comments.
Kathy, All of the puzzle outlines are soumack. The light lines in the flowers are soumack. I use it mainly for outlining and moving fine lines vertically, angled lines and for smoothing stairstepped angles.

Jan-About half way through the piece I realized that they reminded me of little people too. They are a total black. I was trained never to use true black because it would create a visual hole at a distance. So, that is actually what I was attempting to do. I am not sure how successful that is, but I tried. I don't think I'll know until I actually see it hung in a gallery setting and can stand back from it and see the optical blending really well.

THAT is cool!!! :)

Soumak, huh? I keep thinking I need to try that and then forgetting when I actually go to wweave a line that runs vertical. Does the soumak have a noticeably different physical texture?

I really really like this piece.

Wow, Kathe, that is an awesome piece. I am not the only one I see that noticed the little men falling. I Love the peonies and have been trying and liking using soumak {a la your Tapestry 101} to outline and smooth things out

Brenda-It only has a different texture if I want it to have texture. I can control texture by the size of the weft bundle which controls the size of the line. The texture will usually disappear when the soumack bundles is about half of the size of the weft bundle. The other way to control the size of the line or texture is by going over more passes or fewer passes.
