December 29.2008

This has been an interesting week. The weather has been totally uncooperative. Very cold at times in the studio. As always with holidays too many other things going on to spend much time weaving.
My Nautilus is almost done. Nautilus's have always been special to me. It gave me one of my first giggles about opposites when I was a child. We weren't allowed to read fiction-well-at least it was frowned upon in school. We were allowed to read poetry if it was upstanding and didactic. While we were being forced to read and memorize Bryant's Many Chambered Nautilus for the good of our psyche I was busily reading and discovering the Nautilus in Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues...I remember being caught at school with a copy of it and telling my religion instructor that I it was a travelogue. Fortunately for me he had never read Jules Verne's novels.

I finally remembered to take a series of pictures on cutting out and reweaving a section of a tapestry after it is woven for my next book. I have been trying to remember to do that for years. Some how I managed to but a black center in my turquoise and red b.

Better late then never-maybe

Once I get something scheduled, I can usually get it done. I had intended to enter things in my blog once a week. Well, It's the 19th almost two weeks later. So, I guess I really need to take the time and schedule my blog entries for a time I will remember.
Anyway, I am adding a picture of where I am at on my new piece. I restarted working on it about a week ago. I had stopped working on it so I could finish my last piece and meet a specific deadline. I am weaving this for a small monograph I am writing on small format tapestry that should be finished in June or July. I wove So Between once before at 12 epi. on a circular warp wrapped around my Hagan loom. It's a great piece, but I have never been comfortable with the end results. So after a few hours of journaling I figured out what was making me uncomfortable with the piece. It needed to be done in sewing thread at 20 epi. There were a couple of elements I wanted to change and I wanted to use a more skillful approach to the curves in the 2 metal thread swooshes and the crenellated borders. My goal is to have this piece done by the 5th of January, which means I need to hurry and put in some longer hours to meet that goal.
So Between two is being woven at half the size of my First So Between in sewing thread. It will be 14.5 inches tall and and 7.5 inches wide.be 14.5 inches tall and and 7.5 inches wide. So between-wool 12 epi

New Tapestry Finally Finished!

Between Again
Copyright 2008 with detail

This is my new piece that is done with sewing thread. The piece is 96 square inches. I am using one of my favourite techniques-soumak. It involves images that are important to me such as puzzle pieces, Alpha and Omega, feathers, peonies, and a picture in the background that I took of the Vancouver BC skyline. When I enlarged the picture, I discovered that I had taken a picture with an object falling from the sky. A nice surprise!
